1. What is Zakat?
Zakat is an obligatory act of worship involving qualifying wealth. It supports eligible people and is distinct from optional sadaqah. Its obligation depends on the rules that apply to the owner and the wealth.
Qur’anAl-Baqarah 2:43
وَأَقِيمُوا الصَّلَاةَ وَآتُوا الزَّكَاةَ وَارْكَعُوا مَعَ الرَّاكِعِينَ
Allah commands prayer and the giving of Zakat.
Qur’anAt-Tawbah 9:103
خُذْ مِنْ أَمْوَالِهِمْ صَدَقَةً تُطَهِّرُهُمْ وَتُزَكِّيهِمْ بِهَا
Giving from wealth is described as a means of purification.
The Prophet ﷺ included Zakat among Islam’s five pillars.
Sahih al-Bukhari 8SahihThe instruction to Mu‘adh describes Zakat being collected from the wealthy and given to the poor.
Sahih al-Bukhari 1395Sahih2. Nisab: the wealth threshold
Nisab is the minimum qualifying level of wealth. Monetary wealth is compared with a chosen gold or silver standard. Use one consistent standard under the scholarly guidance you follow.
The hadith identifies five uqiyyahs as the silver threshold.
Sahih al-Bukhari 1405SahihThis narration mentions twenty dinars for gold and two hundred dirhams for silver.
Sunan Abi Dawud 1573Sahih, graded by Al-AlbaniThis page uses 612.36 g of pure silver (about 52.5 tola) or 87.48 g of pure gold (about 7.5 tola). These are modern weight conversions; other authorities use different standards. Select gram or tola to match your price quote. This page converts using 1 tola ≈ 11.6638 g; the original gram thresholds determine the calculation. For another standard, enter a custom nisab. Use the automatic world spot estimate or enter a verified local pure-metal price manually.
3. Hawl: when is Zakat due?
For the monetary wealth covered here, a lunar year is generally required after qualifying ownership at nisab. Keep a Hijri Zakat date. The treatment of changing balances, new income and business profit depends on the guidance you follow; each new deposit need not automatically have its own date.
The narration connects Zakat on gold and silver with the passing of a year.
Sunan Abi Dawud 1573Sahih, graded by Al-AlbaniTick the due-date box only when the lunar-year condition that applies to you is fulfilled. Meeting nisab alone does not complete this page’s estimate.
4. What wealth should you include?
Assess assets on your Zakat date and enter monetary values in the same currency. The table explains this page’s fields. These modern categories require fiqh application; the same asset must be counted only once.
Cash & savings
Add the cash and bank balances you own. Enter the total monetary amount, and do not include the same balance twice.
Gold
Enter the current monetary value of your zakatable gold, not its weight. Follow your chosen guidance for jewellery.
Silver
Enter the current monetary value of your zakatable silver, not its weight. Follow your chosen guidance for jewellery.
Business stock
Enter the zakatable value of goods held for resale. Use the guidance you follow for your business assets.
Investments
Enter only the zakatable portion of your investments under the guidance you follow. Avoid counting assets already entered elsewhere.
Money owed to you
Enter collectable amounts owed to you. If repayment is uncertain, seek guidance before including them.
Your home, personal car and everyday belongings are generally excluded from this wealth calculation. An asset held for sale is treated differently from one kept for personal use. Jewellery, shares, pensions and rental income need the assessment method you follow.
Debts and deductions
Schools of fiqh differ on whether and how debts reduce zakatable wealth. Enter only the amount deductible under your chosen guidance, such as qualifying liabilities due now. Do not automatically subtract an entire mortgage or long-term loan. This calculator cannot decide a debt’s eligibility.
5. How does the 2.5% calculation work?
Add the zakatable assets and subtract eligible deductions, with a minimum net value of zero. When that net amount meets your chosen nisab and your due date has arrived, calculate 2.5% of the full net amount. The amount above nisab is not the calculation base.
The silver rate stated in the hadith is one-fortieth, equivalent to 2.5%.
Sahih al-Bukhari 1454SahihNet zakatable wealth × 2.5% = estimated Zakat
Worked example
For assets of NPR 100,000 and eligible deductions of NPR 10,000, net wealth is NPR 90,000. If your selected nisab is met and the due date has arrived, the estimate is NPR 2,250. These example amounts are not today’s nisab or market price.
100,000 − 10,000 = 90,000 NPR
90,000 × 2.5% = 2,250 NPR6. Who can receive Zakat?
Qur’anAt-Tawbah 9:60
Surah At-Tawbah identifies eight categories. Eligibility and distribution should be checked under the relevant scholarly rules.
- The poor (fuqara)
- The needy (masakin)
- Those appointed to administer Zakat
- Those whose hearts are to be reconciled
- Freeing people from bondage
- Eligible people burdened by debt
- For Allah’s cause (fi sabilillah)
- The stranded traveller (ibn al-sabil)
Giving through an organization requires the funds to reach eligible uses and recipients. A charitable project is not automatically Zakat-eligible. Ask how your Zakat will be allocated and identify the transfer as “Zakat”.
7. Intention, payment and dignity
The hadith on intention teaches that actions are judged by intentions. Make a clear intention when giving Zakat.
Sahih al-Bukhari 1SahihQur’anAl-Baqarah 2:264 · 2:267
The Qur’an teaches giving from good wealth and avoiding reminders of generosity or hurtful treatment of recipients.
Check the recipient’s eligibility, pay with the intention of Zakat and keep a record of the amount and date. When using the HRN bank accounts below, include your name and “Zakat” in the reference; the team can assist with transfer arrangements.
8. Zakat on wealth and Zakat-ul-Fitr
Zakat-ul-Fitr is a separate, per-person obligation associated with the end of Ramadan. The hadith mentions one sa‘ of dates or barley and payment before the Eid prayer. It is not calculated as 2.5% of wealth.
Sahih al-Bukhari 1503SahihFollow local scholarly guidance for food measures or any permitted monetary equivalent. This page calculates Zakat on monetary wealth; it does not calculate Zakat-ul-Fitr.
9. Use this calculator correctly
- Choose country, currency and nisab basis. Use the local pure-metal market price for your valuation. Nepal starts in Local market mode with a clearly dated reference that expires automatically. World spot is a separate international estimate. Gram and tola equivalents appear together.
- Add the current monetary value of the qualifying assets and eligible deductions. A metal’s weight belongs in your own valuation, not in the asset amount field.
- Confirm your Zakat due date if applicable, then press Calculate Zakat. Review the summary and use the “i” beside each field for a short explanation.
Cases that need a separate assessment
Agricultural produce, livestock and other specialist categories have their own rules and may have different rates or timing. Minors’ wealth, disputed ownership, uncertain debts and complex investments also require the appropriate fiqh assessment. Do not apply this page’s 2.5% result to every type of asset.
